The 2024 revision of the World Medical Association’s Declaration of Helsinki is key to revitalizing the commitment to ensure that research with human participants is conducted ethically. The Declaration of Helsinki—along with the International Ethical Guidelines for Health-related Research Involving Humans of the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS)—is even more important in the current regional scenario, where national legal instruments governing research formally adopt these international ethical standards instead of promulgating ethical criteria of their own. Indeed, another lesson from the pandemic is the importance of adhering to international standards to facilitate the conduct of large, high-impact trials.
