On behalf of the Bioethics and Law Observatory – UNESCO Chair in Bioethics of the University of Barcelona, please find below information on the Annual International Seminar of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights, UNESCO:

The IV International Seminar on the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights, UNESCO and this year’s specific thematic “Intimacy and confidentiality: health data protection” will take place on the 21 January 2011 in the Antoni Caparrós Auditorium of the Park Cientific of Barcelona.

Organized by the UNESCO Chair in bioethics of the University of Barcelona with the collaboration of the Catalonian Authority for Data Protection, the seminar will be presented by Dídac Ramírez, honourable Dean of the University of Barcelona. The two main presentations “Intimacy and confidentiality in biomedical and behavioural research” and “Consent, confidentiality and governance in biobanks research” will be lead respectively by Ruth Macklin, Professor of Bioethics at the Albert Einstein College, New York and Patricia Kosseim, General Attorney for the Direction of Legal, Political and Parliamentary Services of the Canadian Commission for Data Protection.

The presentations will be followed by round-tables for debate on “Shared Clinical History and Confidentiality” and “Biological samples from human origin and personal data protection” with the participation of several professionals and academics specialized in data protection in the medical and public health field.
