Master in Food Ethics and Law (60 credits)

2nd Edition of the Master in Food Ethics and Law (60 ECTS). The Master in Food Ethics and Law (MAED for the spanish acronym) is a program of the University of Barcelona (UB).

Working in the food industry requires for professionals from scientific disciplines (such as chemistry, food technology or agricultural engineering, among others) that are able to ensure proper legal compliance of foodstuffs. Moreover, research professionals face regularly  a debate on wether the technologies they develop are appropiate or ethical. Accordingly, EU institutions assess the ethical and social implications of any research project that asks for its funding.

Keeping this in mind, food professional need both scientific and multidisciplinary professional skills that ensure the success a of their innovations both from a scientific, ethical and legal perspective. In this context, the Master in Food Ethics and Law (MAED) proposes specific training in Law and Ethics for professionals of the food industry at large.

The  Master's faculty consists of both food industry professionals and renowned scholars. Directed  by Dr. Itziar de Lecuona – Public health Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona - and Maria Jose Plana – qualified lawyer and specialist in Food law and Governance.

The registration process is open from 1st February 2018 and the program will start October 5th 2018. We kindly ask interested candidates to send a brief CV together with the pre-enrollment form to alimentarioobd[@]ub.edu. It is essential for prospective students to duly legalize their university degree as wells as to have sufficient knowledge of Spanish, the Master’s main tuition language.

The  tuition fee is 1,850 €. In addition, the University of Barcelona requires a fee of € 70 per academic year to cover access costs to the Online Campus.

The Master in Food Ethics and Law (MAED) is structured into the following modules:

  • Introduction to Law: 10 ECTS
  • Food Law: 15 ECTS
  • Food Issues & Public Policy: 10 ECTS
  • Food Ethics & Research and Innovation: 15 ECTS
  • Master Thesis: 10 ECTS
